Preparatory work begins for Lister Surgicentre

February 2008 - The new Surgicentre planned for the Lister hospital site, which once built is where the vast majority of day case and short stay surgery for the Trust’s patients will take place, is getting closer to being implemented. From 11 February, initial preparatory work begins that will start clearing the area occupied currently by the now-redundant old postgraduate medical centre.

Designs for the state-of-the-art new facility have been approved already by Stevenage Borough Council, with contracts expected to be signed shortly between the NHS and the preferred bidder for the project, Clinicenta. The Trust expects the final business case to be signed off by the Department of Health later this spring.

Nick Carver, the Trust’s chief executive, said: “As we move closer to securing a final deal to build the new Surgicentre, this is a real marker of the change to come in terms of investment being made in Hertfordshire’s health services. By helping us to separate planned and emergency surgery, the Surgicentre will ensure shorter waiting times and fewer cancelled operations. This will enable our staff to deliver modern, efficient care to their patients in a state-of-the-art environment using the very latest equipment.”

The Surgicentre at the Lister, which is projected to open in 2010, will treat approximately 15,000 people every year for such common procedures as hip and knee replacements, hernia repairs and endoscopies. It will have five operating theatres, three endoscopy rooms and around 20 short-stay inpatient beds, as well as day surgery, outpatient and dedicated paediatric facilities.

Clinicenta will finance the building of the Surgicentre, with the PCT purchasing clinical services from them on behalf of local people, based on the rates agreed in the contract agreed between the two organisations.

External experts have advised the Trust to begin the limited tree-felling required on the site as soon as possible, as birds often begin nesting at this time of year. By acting quickly, it is hoped that damage to nests and/or birds’ eggs can be avoided.

None of the trees earmarked for felling are protected from such action in any way. Equally the Trust is committed to replanting new trees to replace those lost at the hospital, some of which will be part of the landscaping for the new Surgicentre, with others being planted elsewhere on the hospital site.
